Carpet in Paramus, NJ from G. Fried Flooring & Design

Three ways to choose the right carpet

When you walk into a carpet store, you’ll see multiple samples from mills and manufacturers, with a wide assortment of colors, designs, constructions, styles, textures, qualities, and prices. While you don’t need to be an expert, have some basic understanding, so you can get the rug that’s truly aligned to your needs. Whether choosing wall-to-wall, area rugs, or custom stair runners, G. Fried Carpet is your one-stop source.

What are your needs, wants, and priorities?

To get the best carpet flooring, you first need to assess your requirements. In what room will the installation take place? Is it large or small or sunny and dark? Is it a busy room? How will it be used? Do you have extra durability or stain resistance demands? What is the overall decor of your home? What is your budget? Focus on these answers, and don’t be distracted by all the pretty colors and designs.

Do your research

There are blends and acrylics, but the five most commonly selected fibers are wool, nylon, polyester, olefin, and Triexta. Find out about the characteristics of both natural and synthetic fibers because, ultimately, the decision will come down to how much you value specific features. Know construction and style terms such as cut pile, high/low pile, looped, cut and loop, cut pile, frieze, shag, Berber, and Saxony, plush and patterned.

Understand quality

Density refers to how closely together the fibers are tufted, and this is what determines quality. A density value of 3,000 or more is best for the home, but you can also check it yourself. Bend back a sample card; if you see a lot of white space, ask your flooring expert why. Another reliable determinant is twist number, a one to five rating system that means how many times a fiber is turned per inch. Used for only some rugs, the higher number means more durable and less chance for unraveling. That number should be between three and five.
